Former Fairmont Junior High Principal heading to trial, judge denies motion to dismiss

Christopher Ryan, the former principal of Fairmont Junior High School, is heading to trial on charges of Felony injury to a child.

Ryan's attorney's filed a motion to dismiss the case but Judge Nancy Baskin has denied the motion.

The former principal previously worked alongside Scott Crandell, a social worker at the school. The Idaho Capital Sun reports that Scott Crandell was under investigation by the Boise Police for an alleged inappropriate relationship with a student(s) but he committed suicide shortly after the Boise Police confiscated his phone as evidence.

Christopher Ryan is charged with felony injury to a child for allegedly knowing about Crandell's behavior with at least one student and failing to report it, or to prevent him from being alone with the student.

Ryan pled not guilty to all charges and requested a jury trial and his defense attorney has indicated that he intends to retain the right to a speedy trial, however he also filed a motion to dismiss the case. Judge Baskin denied the order, and so Ryan will face trial as scheduled on February 20, 2024, as scheduled.

This trial is the most recent in a string of challenges facing the Boise School District. The district has recently been through complaints over mishandling of sexual assault cases, an ongoing investigation into a Timberline High School teacher that has been placed on leave for months, an intoxicated adult who boarded a school bus armed with a weapon, and the suicide of a school counselor.
